If we want to go deep in Vietnamese history we’ll see that it begins around 2,700 years before. In china successive dynasties were based. All these dynasties ruled Vietnam directly. The period of such ruling time was from 111 BC until 938. At that time Vietnam again gained its lost independence.
China is the neighbor country of Vietnam. So, Vietnam remained a tributary state to China for a lot of its history. Vietnam repelled invasions by the Chinese. The country also repelled other three invasions by the Mongols. The time was between 1255 and 1285. After all these with a view to avoid further conflicts emperor Tran Nhan Tong diplomatically stated Vietnam to a tributary of the Yuan.
In the middle and also to late 19th century, the independent period of Vietnam temporarily ended. At that time Vietnam was colonized by France. During World War II, French was expelled to occupy Vietnam by the imperial Japan. But they retained French administrators as well. After the World War II finishes, France tried to re-establish the colonial rule. But the idea failed because of the First Indochina War. Vietnam was partitioned by the Geneva Accords. To reunite the country it promised democratic election.
But instead of peaceful reunification, this partition resulted into the Vietnam War. In this crucial period, the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China supported the North. On the other hand the United States supported the South.
In 1975 after many Vietnamese deaths, the war ended. It happened with the fall of Saigon. After that reunified Vietnam suffered some internal repression. It was cut off internationally and the reason was Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia and also continuous Cold War within the country.
In 1986, the economic policy of Vietnam was changed by the Communist Party. The party also reformed the private sectors of the country. From the mid-1980s, Vietnam has seen some economic growth and also reduction in political repression.
